Choosing the Right Tool for UI Automation

Computer-Using Agents (CUAs) vs. Robotic Process Automation (RPA)

The rise of Computer-Using Agents (CUAs) — like OpenAI’s Operator, Anthropic’s Computer Use, and Google’s Project Mariner — is changing the game in UI automation.

But a key question remains: When should you use CUAs, and when does classic RPA still make more sense?

🔹 Use CUAs when:

✅ The UI changes frequently — agents dynamically adapt without needing manual reconfiguration

✅ You need to understand the context or handle semi-structured or unstructured data

✅ The process involves unpredictable interactions, like random pop-ups

✅ You prefer to create automation with natural language rather than learn a new low-code platform

🔹 Use RPA when:

✅ The task is highly repetitive and rule-based

✅ You’re processing large volumes and need speed and scale

✅ You require strict consistency for compliance or quality assurance

💬 Bottom line: CUAs bring flexibility and ease of use, while RPA delivers reliability and performance at scale. Choose the tool that best fits your process and environment.
